I’m often asked about iPhones and iPads. And don’t misunderstand, the iPhone 3G is an excellent business productivity tool and I highly recommend it. However, with newly released devices, especially version one units such as the iPad, it’s best to wait a bit.
Although the iPad has been described as a large iPod Touch, it’s really more than that. The larger screen, new processor and revised operating system place it in a new class of computing device -especially when you see other devices coming with a similar form factor running Google’s Android and Windows 7. If you can swing it, go get one and have fun.
But don’t be surprised when it becomes evident it’s better suited as a browser/ reader/ player/ viewer and not so adept at creating documents or other projects requiring a lot of typing and mousing.
So, don’t throw out your notebook PC – at least not yet. When the iPad 2 successor is released it will be less expensive, faster and more refined. I’ll wait until then.
It’s the iPhone’s crossover between consumer and business markets that make it such a hit. But I don’t think there are many business users waiting in line for hours or hammering at an overloaded website trying to get one. Why waste time with all the hassle? I’ll be patient and wait while the early adopters help Apple work out the foibles of the new operating system.
