Have You Checked Out the New Mini “Netbook” Computers?

Netbooks are very light, small and inexpensive notebook computers recently introduced by several manufacturers such as Dell, HP and Acer.

We’ve received numerous questions about them as they have very low prices. That’s because there are several trade-offs from standard notebook PCs, but that’s not a bad thing.

Netbooks were designed to be used on the go for light duty computing tasks such as internet surfing, light word processing and email. It’s not intended as a replacement for your full powered notebook PC or desktop PC. I use mine to listen to music while surfing the web.

First and most important is that these new machines don’t have the usual processor. Most use Intel’s low power Atom processor which is not as fast as standard processors. Netbooks also come with less RAM than most PCs, so you won’t want to have many windows open or programs running at once.

The machines are nice and light (three pounds or so) but the batteries may not have the same capacity as standard notebooks. Also contributing to the reduced weight is a smaller screen. When you see a netbook, you’ll notice the screen size is narrower which may take a little getting used to.

Most netbooks don’t have a DVD drive, so you’ll need an external USB drive to install software.
