Color Laser Printers May Compromise Privacy

Most people don’t know that color laser printers place a microscopic code of yellow dots on every printed page that identifies the serial number of your printer.

The purpose of this is to provide a way for the Secret Service and other government agencies to investigate counterfeit currency printed on a laser printer. However, privacy advocates recently raised concerns that it may be used in other investigations as well.

A blue LED light is used by the Secret Service to reveal the code which can also include the date and time the page was printed.
